The Ishinomaki Laboratory Endai Bench designed by Taiji Fujimori was designed for the residents of Ishinomaki in temporary housing after the Great Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011. Its inspiration comes from engawa, which is an architectural feature of Japanese homes that resemble a veranda or porch surrounding the structure. The engawa served as a hallway and seating area, encouraging time spent outdoors. The Endai bench provides a wide seating surface where one can sit and rest similar to engawa.
