The Fauna is a light fixture born through natural evolution in design. Using woven Abaca as the primary medium of this fixture, we looked at how the material was used in popular culture. We wanted to create a light people could relate to; something that had a sense of place in Philippine culture. The first design we created resembled the silhouette of a skirt or "falda" in Spanish. A simple idea that would be the starting point of our designs with Abaca. Over the course of 2 years, the “falda” light was further developed through various applications of the material; pleating, flattening, tapering, layering, and inverting until we discovered its preferred silhouette. When twisted, layered and mounted on a central core, the material delicately falls open of its own unique volition to resemble a blooming flower - striking, elegant, and relatable. All that was left was to give this light a name. “Flora” was the obvious choice but too on-the-nose. “How about ‘Fauna’ as in flora and fauna?” we said, thinking the words had one and the same meaning. It was almost a year after we launched the Fauna when we found out the word actually meant “animals”; the final comical mistake to add to this design’s natural evolution.
